<a href="https://ww2.nycourts.gov/ip/oji/raisetheage.shtml">Legislation</a> changing the age a minor can be prosecuted as an adult to 18 years of age in criminal cases is enacted.

Raise the Age Legislation

Criminal justice reform initiatives went into effect, including changes to the criminal procedure law <a href="https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/CPL/245.20">requiring prosecutors</a> to share evidence with the defense (a process known as discovery) earlier in the pretrial period, and <a href="https://cdn.ymaws.com/www.nysda.org/resource/resmgr/2020reforms/ny_bail_law_2020.pdf">eliminating the option to set monetary bail</a> or detain people before trial in most nonviolent cases (bail for violent felonies was preserved).

Criminal Justice Reform

All non-essential court functions in New York State were <a href="https://www.nycourts.gov/whatsnew/pdf/Updated-Protocol-AttachmentA3.pdf">postponed</a> until further notice, including grand jury and jury trials.

Due to increases in infection rates in New York State, jury trials are <a href="https://www.nycourts.gov/whatsnew/pdf/JT_Memo_Nov13-001.pdf">suspended</a> again.

Felony Jury Trials Resume

The “<a href="https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2021/s1144">Less Is More Act</a>” went into effect reforming parole to (1) create a pathway to finish parole early through earned time credits; (2) end automatic detention and incarceration for certain technical violations; (3) establish the right of counsel at every stage of the parole revocation process; and (4) set limits on periods of incarceration for technical violations.
